The Spas Research Fellowship developed the international Spas Directory known as Spagazers.com to become the leading world-wide web search facility for spas and health resorts. Following its launch in the UK in 2000, the Spas Directory went international in 2002. The Fellowship is now extending its expertise in on-line data warehouse management to create a new web site that bridges the gap between users and service providers in British National Parks. This is seen as a potential major resource for visitors to National Parks, enabling them to identify the goods and services that they require to make their visit worthwhile and memorable. Says Dr Bruce Osborne, Chairman of the SPAS Research Fellowship, "This is an important development in that it enables key industry resources to be marketed through our data warehouse. We anticipate the data resource substantially enhancing its position and services to the UK tourist industry and consumers in the coming years". Epsom once again in the headlines with its "health giving" mineral salts

Those who know about Epsom will be conscious of the heritage of Epsom Salts dating back to when Epsom was a famous spa resort. The wells yielded the magic waters and the gentry and royalty enjoyed the amusements of Epsom. News now comes via the local paper The Guardian that Epsom Salts are now enjoying an innovative revival, albeit not one that will enhance the reputation of the town.

The front page headlines "Salt Shocker Shakes Town" leads the editorial that outlines how cocaine is being cut with Epsom Salts by drug dealers. A man was recently jailed for using Epsom Salts and glucose to cut amphetamines. The salts (magnesium sulphate) are no longer obtained from the local wells however the name is still used to describe the salts. Another use outlined in the editorial is the use by Spanish Bullfighters; apparently a handful of Epsom Salts given to a bull disorientates the animal to the bull fighters advantage.

When Epsom was a spa town it suffered a reputation for debauchery and wild antics. It would appear that Epsom is destined to continue to be a town of ill repute.

Titanic Spa Accreditation

Titanic Spa, near Huddersfield has proven that you can transform a disused industrial mill into an expression of health and beauty! Out of the rubble has emerged the Titanic Spa, one of England's foremost residential and day spas. Not only has this metamorphosis been extraordinary, but Warrick Burton and his team have also recently qualified for BISA International Spa Accreditation. In the picture Warrick receives the certificate of Accreditation from Alan Jenner, Council Member of BISA, the British International Spa Association, on their stand at Professional Beauty at ExCel recently. Also qualifying for BISA Accreditation for individual therapists is Becky Hall at Titanic Spa. BISA Spa Accreditation is based on a customer satisfaction survey carried out by the Spas Research Fellowship as an independent, impartial body. Using the word spa could drop you into hot water according to Belgians

Without Prejudice Preamble to our Occasional Paper on the use of the word SPA - The provenance of the word SPA has taken on a new significance in the 21st century, particularly English language usage. During the 20th century the word was commandeered by the Spa Monopole organisation of Belgium for a brand name in the bottled water markets. Spa Monopole are major bottlers of SPA water, named after the health resort in the Ardennes where the water is sourced. As a result of a combination of EC Directives, local legislation and legal depositions they argue that they have built up considerable reputation in this word in the water industry but they also claim (and with some success) that if you use this word in other trades, you are infringing their registered Trade Mark, SPA. The counter argument appears to be that the word SPA has a generic application in the English language and has had for many years. In spite of this, Spa Monopole licensed Elizabeth Arden to use the word for a range of beauty therapy products world wide. There is now considerable debate as to whether this agreement has any validity and whether it is reasonable to attempt to commandeer an English language generic word as a brand name for an organisation that does not even have English as its native tongue. If Spa Monopole were ever successful in establishing exclusive rights to the English usage of the word SPA this would have major implications for its use in the health resorts industry world wide. We can see a lot of time and money being spent on arguing this case with the lawyers having a field day while the industry reels from the costs incurred. Perhaps one day we will not be able to use the words "Bath" or "Malvern" either!
